The Fairfax County Department of Planning & Zoning has released their latest draft plan that will regulate the future development around the new Metro stations coming to Tysons Corner. While the plan has a number of positive components, we believe doesn’t allow for the density that’s needed to create an urban village in Tysons Corner.
The draft plan creates a more urban feel for Tysons – but only for a two-and-a-half block distance from the Metro stations. After that, density – which impacts building height and how close businesses are to each other – dramatically falls, leaving us with the sprawling, office park environment we currently enjoy as the status quo. Tysons Tomorrow is confident that people can and will walk more than two blocks to get to work, to go out and play, and to get to their homes, and we want a Tysons that reflects this reality.
Luckily, this is only a draft plan and the Department of Planning & Zoning is seeking input from citizens like you. We’ve made it easy for you submit your comments online via the Tysons Tomorrow web site. Please take a minute and send your message.

Let them know you support a gradual reduction in density starting at a 1/2 mile from stations, rather than the current drop which begins at 1/8 of a mile out. Urge them to adopt this more reasonable approach, as it will enable a real urban community to develop around each station.
It will only take a minute, and will make a big difference at Department of Planning & Zoning.
