The Fairfax County Planning Commission will hold a hearing on September 8 regarding the Spring Hill Demonstration Project. The project, if approved, would be the first real step towards green, mixed-use, transit-oriented development in Tysons Corner. Tysons Tomorrow supports this project because it is consistent with our vision for Tysons Corner, and will help us to maximize the use of the new Silver Line metro stations once they are open.
At Tysons Tomorrow we have always supported the creation of a transit-oriented community centered around metro stations, surrounded by relatively high-density development, with progressively lower-density development spreading outwards from the center. We want to help create and support a new, vibrant community where people live, shop, work and play using transit, pedestrian walkways, bicycles or cars.
We believe that urban sprawl, a troubling and growing challenge in our region, is neither economically nor environmentally sustainable. In an area where traffic congestion clogs major arteries well into the evenings, we are committed to mixed-use development that allows access to intelligent transit options at all times of day.
We believe that Spring Hill Demonstration Project helps move this vision forward. The project seeks to convert an area of urban sprawl into a location that is highly livable and green, and would maximize the Spring Hill Metro Station and land that surrounds it.
